Expert summary
Joseph Stalin was the ruler of the USSR from 1929 to 1953. Born in 1879 with the name Dzhugashvili he later took the name Stalin (“Man of Steel”) when he was a young revolutionary writing pseudonymously. From 1902 through 1917 Stalin was arrested and exiled multiple times. Following Lenin's death and after political maneuvering Stalin was in charge of the Communist Party by 1928. He pushed for rapid collectivization and industrialization under the banner of “Socialism in One Country”. Stalin then purged the party of dissident members and executed half of all the army's officers. Stalin's World War II involvement helped bring about the defeat of Germany, the ideological division of Europe, and the formation of the United Nations.
